Nsanje District earns kudos for managing refugees well
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) operations coordinator Vivianne Kibon has commended Nsanje District Council for properly handling asylum seekers from Mozambique in December 2024.
The asylum seekers fled Mozambique following a civil war that broke out in that country after the presidential election that declared Daniel Chapo as winner.
The asylum seekers settled at Nyamithuthu Refuge Settlement Camp in Nsanje until they returned to their country early this year.

Speaking on Wednesday during a review meeting in Nsanje, Kibon said she was pleased that Malawi Red Cross Society used the money for its intended purpose.
“I, therefore, thank Malawi Red Cross Society and Nsanje District Council for a job well done. They complemented the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ [UNHCR] efforts to improve the welfare of the asylum seekers,” she said.
Kibon, who is based in Harare, Zimbabwe, but is coordinator for Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe said she was shocked by the United States of America’s decision to withdraw support from UNHCR by August this year in the country.
On his part, Red Cross acting director Leonard Maganga thanked IFRC and DG-Eco who supported them to provide humanitarian assistance to the refugees.
Nsanje district commissioner Dominic Mwandira said his staff showed commitment to work with the asylum seekers.
“Most of the asylum seekers arrived on Christmas Eve when we were on holiday but we came back to the office to work,” he said
